Outdoor hanging lights — also called exterior pendant lights or hanging lanterns — are suspended ceiling-mounted fixtures designed for covered outdoor spaces. They're most commonly used on verandahs, patios, porches, pergolas, entryways, and alfresco dining areas, providing ambient overhead lighting while adding a decorative focal point to the space.
Most outdoor hanging lights are rated for covered or sheltered installations only — protected from direct rain but exposed to humidity and temperature changes. If your space is uncovered or exposed to direct weather, look for a fixture with an IP65 rating or higher. The IP rating and installation requirements are listed on each product page.
They hardwire into a 120V (US) or 240V (AU) ceiling junction box, the same as an indoor pendant. The key difference outdoors is that the junction box must be rated for exterior use and properly sealed. We recommend a licensed electrician for all outdoor ceiling installations.
Yes, on most models. The majority of our outdoor hanging lights come with an adjustable cord or chain that can be shortened at installation. The maximum drop length is listed on each product page so you can plan for your ceiling height before purchasing.
For covered alfresco and patio areas, a minimum clearance of 7 feet (2.1m) from the floor to the bottom of the fixture is recommended. Over dining tables or seating, hanging slightly lower — around 6.5–7 feet (2–2.1m) — creates a more intimate feel. Always account for wind movement in open-sided outdoor spaces.
In open-sided covered areas like pergolas or verandahs, some gentle movement is normal. Look for fixtures with a heavier base or a rigid mounting arm if wind movement is a concern. Lighter fixtures with long cord drops are better suited to fully enclosed or sheltered spaces.
This varies by product and is listed on each product page. Many of our outdoor hanging lights use integrated LED and require no bulb at all. Where a replaceable bulb is required, the compatible type and fitting are specified in the product listing.
Some models are dimmable, some are not — check the product page before purchasing. Where dimming is supported, a compatible exterior-rated dimmer switch is required. Outdoor hanging lights can also be placed on a timer or smart switch for automated on/off control.
